# Closed-Cell Spray Foam Removal

Closed-cell spray foam is the most problematic type installed in UK roofs. It is rigid, dense, bonds tightly to timber and traps moisture — leading to rot. Removal is more involved than open-cell but essential to make the property mortgageable and structurally sound.

## How to identify closed-cell foam

-   Hard and rigid when tapped
-   Higher density (~35–45 kg/m³)
-   Often yellow, beige or pale green
-   Applied in thinner layers (50–100mm) but multiple coats
-   Acts as a vapour barrier

## Why closed-cell is the highest risk

Because closed-cell foam is impermeable, any moisture from inside the home that reaches the rafters becomes trapped between the foam and the timber. Over time, this causes fungal decay, woodworm activity and structural weakening — even when no leak exists.

## The professional removal method
